Before the Grad · an example

What Marcus’s sister collected before he left.

This is what a sister, a parent or a best friend puts together in the last weeks of school, from the people who watched the whole thing happen. Seven of them — family, his coach, the physics teacher who had his number — a few weeks, and one private link Marcus opened the night before he moved. Everything below is Marcus’s project, exactly as it looked.

  1. One person starts it. Usually the sibling. Marcus finds out at the end.
  2. Everyone who watched him get here adds to it. Teachers, coaches, the friend since year seven. No app, no account.
  3. Marcus opens it once. On his phone, the night before everything changes.

The project is fictional: Marcus, the people and every photograph and story were made up for this example. The experience is real.

A story

What is the moment you will keep from these years?

He gave his relay place to a freshman and never told anybody he had done it. I only found out because the freshman’s mother rang me in tears. Marcus had told that boy he was carrying a hamstring. He was not carrying a hamstring. He ran the 800 forty minutes later and took nine seconds off his own time.

Coach Brennan, his track coach

The part he will never mention

Write them something to read when they get there.

Marcus. You have never once needed telling. Your mother and I have spent eighteen years waiting to be needed and mostly being handed things you had already fixed. Let somebody carry something for you up there. That is the whole letter. Dad.

Ray Adeyemi, his dad

4 · What they sent

2 photos.

Photographs from the phase he would rather forget, and one from last season.

5 · Then Marcus opened it

The night before he moved, on his phone.

Funny first, then the letters. Built from everything above and shaped by the organizer before it went out — and it does not end where he thinks it does.
