Wren has no story yet. Everyone around her already does.

This is what a sister, a parent or a best friend gathers in the last weeks before a baby arrives — not about the baby, who has done nothing yet, but about the family she is about to land in. Nine people wrote down what they had: who her parents were at ten, what the kitchen sounds like on a Tuesday, where the name came from. Wren gets to read it when she is old enough to care.

  1. One person starts it. Usually while everyone is still waiting.
  2. Everyone already in the family adds what they have. Childhood photographs, old stories, predictions, a song. No app, no account.
  3. The parents open it now. Wren opens it later — at five, at eighteen, whenever someone hands it to her.

Wren is fictional, and so is everyone here: the family, the drawings and every answer were written for this example. The experience is real.

A story

An old family story this child should hear someday.

My mother was called Wren. She took in sewing, and she hummed at the machine — no tune, just the same four notes, over and over, for hours, and she did not know she was doing it. I have heard it in Taylor since she was small. She does it over a laptop now instead of a treadle, but it is the same four notes, and when I tell her she says she was not humming. My mother said exactly that too.

Wren. You are named for my grandmother, who hummed without knowing she was doing it, at a sewing machine, for about forty years. Apparently I do it too. Apparently I deny it. If somebody tells you that you are humming — and they will — it has been going on for four generations and there is no point arguing. That is what you are from. Also, your father has been talking to you through my stomach for six weeks and has not once said anything sensible.
